Short answer
Army eligibility is different from technical wings.
Arts and Commerce students are not automatically excluded from NDA. In the UPSC NDA & NA Examination (II), 2026 notice, the Army wing requires a Class 12 pass or equivalent. The Air Force and Naval wings of NDA, and the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy, require Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
This distinction matters when a student chooses Class 11 subjects. Eligibility rules can change, so use this guide to understand the structure and then read the notification for the examination you will actually take.
Official subject requirement
Which NDA route can each stream target?
Army wing may be available
A Class 12 pass or equivalent meets the stated educational requirement for the Army wing in the NDA II 2026 notice. Without Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, the Air Force, Naval and 10+2 Naval Academy routes do not meet that notice’s subject requirement.
Check subjects, not the stream label
Commerce students may target the Army wing if they meet the applicable Class 12 requirement. A student can consider technical wings only if the actual Class 12 subjects satisfy the Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics requirement in the current notice.
Wider service preferences
Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics can satisfy the stated educational condition for the Army, Air Force and Naval wings and the 10+2 Naval Academy route, subject to every other eligibility and selection condition.
Important distinction
Army eligibility does not remove the Mathematics paper.
All candidates sit the same NDA written examination structure: Mathematics and the General Ability Test. An Arts or Commerce student applying with an Army preference still needs to prepare the Mathematics syllabus. School-stream eligibility and written-exam subjects are two different questions.
- Eligibility question: Does the student’s Class 12 qualification permit the chosen wing?
- Written-exam question: Can the student perform in NDA Mathematics and GAT?
- Selection question: Can the student also meet SSB, medical, document and merit requirements?
UPSC’s official NDA II 2026 examination page also provides the notification and the actual 2026 Mathematics and GAT question papers.
Preparation plan
If you are an Arts or Commerce student
- Audit Mathematics honestly. Start with arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry foundations instead of jumping straight to full mocks.
- Use the official syllabus. Convert every listed topic into a checklist and record solved, revised and tested status.
- Keep GAT balanced. Build English, science awareness, history, geography and current-affairs habits without assuming GAT alone can compensate for weak Mathematics.
- Practise official papers. Use UPSC papers to understand question style; do not infer a permanent pattern from one paper.
- Review errors weekly. Separate concept gaps, calculation mistakes, time pressure and guesses in a simple error log.
Our NDA mock-test analysis guide explains a practical review system, while the Mathematics preparation guide shows how to build concept practice without claiming an official pattern change.
Before choosing Class 11 subjects
Keep the intended service route visible.
A student who wants to keep the Air Force, Naval and 10+2 Naval Academy routes open should examine the current PCM requirement before finalising subjects. A student focused on the Army wing may have more stream flexibility, but still needs serious Mathematics preparation for the written paper.
Do not select a stream only because someone calls it “best for NDA.” Consider school performance, genuine subject ability, alternative career options and the official requirements for the intended services. Parents can use the two-year NDA preparation guide after Class 10 to plan academics, fitness and exam preparation together.
Common questions
NDA eligibility by stream
Can an Arts student apply for NDA?
For the NDA II 2026 notice, a Class 12 pass or equivalent is the educational qualification for the Army wing. Air Force, Naval and 10+2 Naval Academy routes require Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at Class 12. Recheck the notice for your examination.
Can a Commerce student apply for NDA?
Commerce students may be educationally eligible for the Army wing if they meet the applicable Class 12 condition. Service preferences requiring PCM depend on the student’s actual subjects, not simply the Commerce label.
Do Arts and Commerce students write NDA Mathematics?
Yes. The NDA written examination includes a Mathematics paper and a General Ability Test. The Army wing’s broader Class 12 eligibility does not remove the written Mathematics paper.
Can a Class 11 student apply?
No. The NDA II 2026 notice says candidates appearing in Class 11 are not eligible. Candidates appearing in Class 12 may apply subject to the notice’s conditions and proof deadlines.
Does meeting the subject rule guarantee selection?
No. Eligibility only permits consideration. Selection also depends on the written examination, SSB, medical fitness, document verification, service preferences, vacancies and merit under the applicable notice.
