Written examination first
Students apply through UPSC for the notified NDA and Naval Academy examination. Candidates who qualify the written stage proceed under the service-selection process described in the notice.
Commissioned entry guide ·
Three officer-entry pathways can look similar from a distance. Their applications, shortlisting and training routes are not the same.
Choose with evidence
After Class 12, an aspirant may hear about the UPSC National Defence Academy examination, the Indian Army Technical Entry Scheme and the Indian Navy 10+2 B.Tech Cadet Entry. All can lead toward officer training, but they use different gates.
This comparison explains the planning differences without treating an old age range, percentage or application date as permanent. Official notices control every cycle. As reviewed on 21 October 2026, the UPSC NDA II 2026 application window had closed, the Indian Navy Jan 2027 10+2 B.Tech window shown on its official site had also closed, and the Army’s published TES-55 merit list concerned a course commencing in July 2026. These are evidence of the routes—not open-application promises.
At a glance
Students apply through UPSC for the notified NDA and Naval Academy examination. Candidates who qualify the written stage proceed under the service-selection process described in the notice.
TES is a separate Army technical-entry process. Academic and other eligibility conditions, shortlisting rules, vacancies and dates come from the specific Army notice.
The Navy publishes a separate 10+2 B.Tech Cadet Entry notice. Its official material describes shortlisting, SSB, medical and merit stages plus a four-year B.Tech training route.
Route 01
NDA/NA is the broadest of these three routes because the UPSC examination feeds notified Army, Navy, Air Force and Naval Academy vacancies. Preparation therefore includes the written Mathematics and General Ability Test papers before the service-selection stages applicable to a qualified candidate.
Best planning fit: students who want to keep more than one service preference open and are ready for a national written examination as well as SSB-oriented development.
Official check: use the current UPSC Active Examinations page and the exact examination notice. The NDA/NA II 2026 page records its notification, closing date and 13 September 2026 examination; it is not a current application invitation.
Route 02
TES should not be presented as “NDA without an exam.” It is a separate entry with its own notice, technical-academic conditions, shortlisting method, SSB process, medical assessment, merit and training instructions. A student who prepares only to clear a shortlist can be unready for the later stages.
Best planning fit: students with a genuine interest in a technical Army career who satisfy every condition in the current TES notice and can explain that interest consistently.
Official check: use only Join Indian Army and the current course notice. The official TES-55 merit list, published 24 April 2026 for the July 2026 course, confirms the entry’s current operation but does not replace a future application notice.
Route 03
The Navy’s official material describes a four-year B.Tech training pathway, with shortlisting followed by SSB, medical fitness and final merit conditions. The academic shortlisting details and branch allocation can change by notice, so an aspirant should not assume that one year’s criteria automatically apply to the next.
Best planning fit: students interested in naval service and engineering study who meet the exact academic and notice-specific criteria.
Official check: review the latest page on Join Indian Navy. The site showed the Jan 2027 application window had been extended only to 29 June 2026; it was closed at this review. An official 10+2 B.Tech notice illustrates the training and selection structure but should not be used as a future-date or future-eligibility promise.
Decision worksheet
Check date of birth, Class 12 subjects and marks, marital status, nationality, gender provisions and any examination-score requirement in the live notice.
For NDA, plan for UPSC written papers. For technical entries, understand exactly how the current notice shortlists candidates.
A technical degree is not a shortcut around military responsibility. Research the training environment and service commitment.
Develop communication, responsibility, judgement, teamwork and fitness over time rather than memorising model answers.
Protect Board and college options. A responsible plan never depends on one application window or one merit list.
Common errors
Official percentage, age, JEE, vacancy and branch conditions are cycle-specific. Save the current notice and make a checklist from that document.
Shortlisting only moves a candidate to the next stage. SSB, medical fitness, merit and vacancy conditions still apply as stated by the service.
Multiple eligible applications can be sensible, but preparation should include honest research into the Army, Navy and Air Force rather than a generic rehearsed answer.
Strong school fundamentals protect college choices and support technical-entry eligibility. Build defence preparation around the academic calendar.
